SAIRPi Project - Slackware AI on Raspberry Pi

Linux Foundation Edge is a gold standard umbrella organisation for open-source edge computing

Welcome to the SAIRPi Project

SAIRPi is an independent project focused on researching and developing real-time AI inference on edge computers.

Our aim is to combine the stability and reliability of Slackware Linux operating systems with the versatility of the Raspberry Pi computers and the cutting-edge capabilities of state-of-the-art Hailo AI Processors, and to share our work with the broader Linux community and rest of the world. We’re here for the builders, the hobbyists, the engineers, and the online communities who are interested in what the Edge AI experience has to offer.

We intend to be a hub for our custom Slackware AI on Raspberry Pi setups, optimised settings, and hardware-specific configurations using Hailo AI Accelerators. Whether you are looking for tips on running AI inferences on Slackware, Raspberry Pi configurations, or know-how to get your Hailo-10H NPU running at its peak, we aim to provide solutions for all those kinds of things right here on this project website. No bloat, no bureaucracy, no fluff - just straight information, R&D activities, testing and results, the C++ / Python / Bash code to achieve it, and the settings/configurations that makes it all work perfectly.

We're keen to support Slackware Linux within the AI community and promote it as a viable option to run edge-native AI inferences on Hailo hardware. With well over a decade of ARM-based development behind us, we’re here to collaborate and publish our work and experiences so that we and the next generation of Slackware AI enthusiasts may benefit. For those interested in why we selected Slackware Linux as our operating system, out of the many options available, take a look at the page.

The SAIRPi Project is currently coordinating efforts and components. This website is still being built, but will surely grow and progress over the next few weeks as development continues.

What you will find on the SAIRPi website

The menu on the left of the page offers easy navigation around the website.

The is designed to share news, thoughts, ideas, opinions, experiences, progress, and updates. Anything and everything related to the SAIRPi Project will appear here.

The page gives an overall view of the website content.

The feature enables you to enter search queries and lookup the relevant pages on the website that include those parameters. The results include the link to the page and a brief text output for search parameter context.

You can follow SAIRPi news and updates in your browser via the page in human-readable HTML format, or get real-time updates delivered directly to your preferred feed reader with the in XML format.

SAIRPi Project Muse Views ...

On this website you'll frequently encounter the "spmuse". This is a prominent dialog box with the SAIRPi Project logo in the top left corner. The purpose is to add comments, or highlight important notes, or elements that are informative, and separated so that it stands out. Think of it as a whispering guide. Sometimes "spmuse" content is no more than a casual parenthesis, while at other times it's absolutely essential and/or important. So keep an eye out for it and always read what the "spmuse" contains.

This is an example of the "spmuse" dialog box.

"spmuse" is pronounced "smooz" or "smewz". The "p" is silent. 😲

Thanks for reading this!

The SAIRPi Terminal

On this website you will see the following terminal box. This terminal box is designed to emulate a terminal screen on the website and displays commands and their output, scripting language code, and other plain text that can be copied and pasted easily. The terminal below is just an example, and we injected some Slackware 13.37 nostalgia into it, as well as some state-of-the-art Hailo-10H AI Accelerator references. Don't worry about the flickers on the terminal screen, that's the "Hollywood Effect" or (more accurately) caused by failing capacitors in the PSU (power supply unit) in a real world scenario.

The terminal box idea was inspired by, and fashioned after, the TeleVideo 910 terminal of the early 1980s era. 💻 🤓

Steampunk themed Slackware Linux wallpaper: a masterful and richly detailed tribute to Slackware, featuring Tux, accoutred in befitting apparel, flanked by an intricate network of phosphor bronze pipes, pressure gauges, glowing vacuum tubes, and copper gears, set against a metallic honeycomb backdrop with a radiant (unseen) energy source in the background. The desktop design is anchored by a weathered metal plate at the bottom inscribed with the mantra, "Stability by design. Reliability that endures." These wallpapers were created by the SAIRPi Project using Banana Pro and GIMP.
